Trimming Tzitzis

Is it permitted to cut the ends of tzitzis if some strands are hanging out considerably more than the rest?

    It is permitted to trim the Tzitzis strings if they are too long. The accepted custom is not to use metal to cut the strings, but rather to use ceramic scissors, a plastic knife, or even teeth! Also, when cutting the strings, the length of the remaining strings should be at least double the length of the Tzitzis until the end of the knots.
