Thick Darkness

Question

“The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the a thick darkness where God was.” (Shemot 20:21). My question is: Does God resides in thick darkness?

    No, God does not “reside” anywhere. The Sages teach that the world exists within God and we should not make the mistake of thinking that God “exists” within this world. However, the voice of God was heard by everyone during the Giving of the Ten Commandments and the Jewish People were terrified from the “voice” of God which is why God made His Voice emanate from the darkness of a cloud so that they would be scared.
