The Simchat Torah Luncheon

Question

The Simchat Torah luncheon seems to be a very popular event. It was held at many congregations during my childhood (I remember going to them with my family when I was a toddler), and continues to be held all over town today. Is there some ancient reason for this tradition? Or is it a more modern development from the 20th century?

    I think that it is a relatively new concept and I think that it is an outgrowth of very long services. Simchat Torah is one of the longest days in the Jewish year and it is often late afternoon when the prayers comes to an end. Rather than go home, everyone stays, and they eat the festive Yom Tov lunch together as a community.
