    Rashi, the foremost commentary on the Torah, explains that the phrase is referring to the offspring of the Jewish People. The reference to ashes actually belongs to the phrase preceding it – “the dust of Jacob” – as one of the explanations is that it is referring to the ashes of the Red Heifer.
