Teffilin Strap

Question

There are some cracks in the leather of the yad teffilin where i tuck in behind my hand when tightening it at the end. The rest of the arm – all that is visible – is completely black. Do the straps need to be changed or is it still kosher?

    Without seeing the strap it is hard to say for sure but I would have thought that the strap probably can be colored with a special black marker that has been made specifically for Tefillin. Before using it you should say “Leshem Mitzvos Tefillin”.
