It is absolutely permissible to trim your Tzitzit. There is a concept within the Halacha of not cutting Tzitzit strings with a metal utensil, such as a pair of scissors. What you can do is to cut them with your teeth (it is a lot easier than it sounds). Otherwise, there are scissors that are made of porcelain, which are made specifically for cutting Tzitzit strings and can be bought in Jewish bookstores.
The length of the strings after the last knot should be a minimum of twice as long as the length of the strings that are knotted.
