Shaving Neck With Razor

Question

Are men allowed to shave their neck with a razor since it is not part of the face? Or do we have to use electric shaver?

  1. According to the Halacha, it is permissible to shave the back of the neck using a razor.

Halachically there are five places on the face that it is forbidden to shave with a razor. They are the upper and lower jaw bones on either side and the chin. All other places on the face you may technically shave with a razor. ‘Technically,’ because from the edge of the cheek to the edge of the upper jaw bones is a very fine distinction. Going too close to the jaw bone while trimming your cheeks is very risky.

Because the prohibition of shaving with a razor involves five negative precepts, one should only use an electric shaver that has been approved. One who shaves his entire fact with a razor has committed five ‘Aveirot’. One who shaves his temples transgresses two more precepts.
