Niddah: Bleeding from Medical Examination

Question

My wife has been in menopause for almost ten years and not needed to use the mikvah. But a recent medical examination she underwent caused her some vaginal bleeding that lasted for almost two days. She was so concerned that she called the doctor, who told her medically there is nothing to worry about. Is she considered to be in a state of niddah? Will she have to use the mikvah?

  1. If it is absolutely clear that the bleeding is from the examination, your wife is not considered to be Niddah. In your case, it sounds pretty certain that the blood has come from a wound that she received during the examination, and there is no reason for her to act as if she is Niddah. However, if you wish to make sure, she can take a cloth and pour some alcohol on it and make a Bedikah. If it stings, there is absolutely no doubt that the blood is from a wound.

Just a word of caution: Even though I would actually recommend that your wife make such a Bedikah, it will be extremely painful for a short while afterwards.
