Multiple Wicks for Havdalah

Question

Is using multiple wicks for Havdalah a chiyuv in Halacha, or minhag? If it’s a chiyuv, where is it sourced (in the Talmud/gemara)? And If you can only find a single wick candle, is it valid B’dieved?

  1. It is not an obligation to use a candle with more than one wick for Havdalah but it is the accepted norm. That means that a person is not obligated to find a multi-wicked candle (or to put two candles together so that their wicks combine) but it is the correct thing to do. Someone who made Havdalah using a single wick has fulfilled their obligation and they do not have to repeat Havdalah again.
