Lighting Shabbat Candles: Reason

so why do they light a candle to start a sabbath?

    God commanded the Jewish nation not to kindle fire ON Shabbat. However, there is no problem with lighting candles BEFORE Shabbat begins. Shabbat commences at sunset on Friday, which is why the Shabbat candles should be lit twenty minutes prior to then. The Shabbat candles add warmth and light, and enhance the feelings of harmony within the home.
