Heart of Palm: Kosher?
Question
What is the kashrus status of heart of palm. There is lots of heart of palm on the market with reliable hechsherim. But in order to harvest heart of palm, a palm tree needs to be cut down and is destroyed. Many species of palm tree are fruit bearing. The label does not say what palm species it comes from.
Answers
In general, once the tree has been cut down, its “fruit” can be eaten even if the person who cut the tree down was a Jew. However, hearts of palm that are grown commercially are less Halachically complicated because the trees themselves are considered to be the fruit, as they are are planted expressly for the hearts.
