Holiday-Themed Clothing
At this time of the year, retailers sell a lot of printed tops with holiday themed designs, such as trees, reindeer, poinsettias, snowflakes, and patterns of red, green, and other holiday colors. Many of these tops meet the requirements for tzniut in terms of what parts of the body they cover. And they are some of the most comfortable clothes on the market. Would it be permitted to wear these?
Answers
It is a fascinating question! The contemporary Poskim rule that one should not buy clothing that is obviously identifiable with non-Jewish holidays – especially the holidays at this time of the year. Why is that? Because to wear such clothing is giving tacit credence to their beliefs. This is so despite the fact that the clothing was manufactured with the only “religious belief” being making money.
