God and Tragic Events

Question

How can God watch 7 year olds get raped? And please don’t say “free will” because that would indicate that God cares more about the rapist’s right of free will than the defiled kid.

    I truly empathize with your question – it is a question (in its many permutations) that has kept the most brilliant scholars awake at night throughout the generations. Unfortunately, it is also a question that is almost impossible to answer in a succinct fashion through an email forum. Personally, I would suggest that you read If God Is So Good Why Is The World So Bad? by Benjamin Bleich. I would also suggest another book by Lisa Aiken entitled Why Me? Why Anyone?. There are also lectures about the subject of suffering by Rabbi Yitzchok Breitowitz and by Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb that you may find helpful in trying to come to some kind of an understanding.
