Whether coffee is considered to be Chamar Medinah – a national drink – is the source of great Halachic debate among the contemporary Poskim. Some rule that it is and some rule that it is not. For those who rule that it is, this would mean that coffee can be used (in extenuating circumstances) for Kiddush during the day if there is no wine available.
However, in all events, the Mishnah Berurah rules, 272:27, that the leniency to use Chamar Medinah for Kiddush is only applicable for Shabbos day Kiddush. The Mishnah Berurah rules that Chamar Medinah should not be used for Friday night Kiddush. If wine is not available, Friday night Kiddush should be made over the challahs.
