Naming After Living Relatives

Hello Rabbi,
I have a question regarding Ashkenazi tradition. I know that we don’t typically name children after living relatives. However, I’m wondering about the practice of using the maiden name of a relative/friend/person I love and admire as a way to honor her. Since the person no longer carries the maiden name after getting married, could using it be considered against Jewish tradition? Or would that be considered as a meaningful and respectful gesture?
Could you please provide some guidance?

With regards to Jewish tradition, I cannot think of any reason why it might be a problem. I am not quite sure how to incorporate her previous family name to a child’s first names. But that, I am sure, is something that you must have thought about already! In any event, perhaps it might be a good idea to let the person know what you would like to do, just to make sure that they have no objection.
