Dinei Yichud with Single Mother

Question

My neighbor across the hall is a single mother with an 11-year-old son. She is divorced from her son’s father and shares custody, but her son will be there this coming Shabbos. She invited me over for Shabbos lunch. Is an 11-year-old boy able to negate yichud?

  1. Rav Moshe Feinstein rules that a child over the age of seven can be relied upon for Dinei Yichud. Therefore, it would seem that an eleven-year-old boy should be fine. However, it does somewhat depend on the maturity level of the child and whether they are able to understand what is happening around them and they are able to explain to others what they saw.
