See the Rema in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 696:8. He cites two opinions: one that permits and one that does not, and concludes that the custom is to be lenient.
However, the Mishnah Berurah (by the Chafetz Chaim, 1838-1933) mentions halachic sources who recommend abolishment and prohibition of this custom. It also seems that this ruling of numerous authorities, including contemporary ones. They address this topic in their responsa and rule to prohibit the practice, and quote early poskim who refer to it as wicked.
However, as with any halachic ruling that is a practical one for a person in a specific time, place and set of circumstances, it is essential to speak with a local Orthodox Rabbi for a definitive ruling.
