Breaking Glass at Wedding

Question

The Mishnah berurah I believe brings down breaking a plate or glass at weddings as part of Zecher lechurban. A) Is this Halacha, or mere minhag? B) if this is Halacha, does the plate or glass have to be particular quality (like chinaware)

  1. Breaking a glass under the Chuppah is a custom (not a “mere custom”) that was accepted by the vast majority of communities. It is mentioned in the Talmud and became the prevalent custom more than eight hundred years ago.

There is no requisite for what to use. However, common sense dictates that the glass should be made of thin glass and should be wrapped well before the Chosson smashes it.
