Kosher Indian Restaurant
Question
Hi, Rabbi. Some friends recently introduced me to an Indian restaurant which is certified diary/kosher by a rabbi/organization that I've never heard of. Unfortunately, I don't have their card and can't tell you who it is. The problem that I have is that this place is filled with carvings, paintings, and statues of Hindu deities. Right next to the door to the street is an enormous figure of the elephant god. I used to study about Hindu religion and am intellectually comfortable with it, but the juxtaposition of idols and kashrus and the assumed encouragement of Jews to engage in that environment is confusing to me. Is this, overall, a "kosher" situation, or is the cerfitying rabbi missing something by not insisting that if the establishment wants Jewish patronage, they need to tone down the decorating? Thank you.
