Do one have to take out contact lenses when going to the mikveh?

Shalom. I am a Breslov Chassid and as such have payot, but I have never been able to curl them properly. I have considered using a curling iron, but I am not sure if that would be Halachicly appropriate for a man to use. If not, do you know how I should curl them?
