Hi Rabbi! Shana Tovah...Can you please explain the significance of using the ram's horn as a shofar as opposed to something else that would serve the same means? Is there an ocurrence in the Torah where the ram's horn is used that would signify its use today? Thank you.

i belong to a conservative congregation but was educated in my youth in an orthodox family... i was disappointed at the rosh hashanah service that the shofar was not sounded.... i realize that it was shabbat and musical instruments are prohibited on shabbat.... however, there is a commandment to "hear the shofar".... is this a mitvah? is the mitzvah from the torah, rabbinic, halachic or what? does the commandment overide the restriction against musical instruments which i understand is rabinic and not torah based (other than equating playing an instrument with the prohibition against "work")... which takes precedent and why? Bear in mind that in conservative shuels, although the orthodox disapprove, organs and pianos are played on shabbat, and other musical instruments as well.... there is some serious inconsistency....i know that the shofar is sounded on the second day, but the attendance falls way off in the conservative community....

I once learnt that some great chacham said he had learnt drash his whole life and so one day he realized he never learnt the pshat correctly. What's the source for this? Also, where does Rashi bring up the importance of pshat in Bereisheit? Thanks
