I am a cantorial student. I am aware that tuning forks and pitch pipes, not to mention other instruments, are all forbidden on Shabat and Yom Tov. The choirmaster at Khal Adat Yeshurun ("Breuer's") uses an Accutron wristwatch to find the pitch. This watch uses an actual tuning fork to keep itself running, and so when placed close to the ear, one hears a musical note. This watch is generally approved by the major poskim. However, it isn't made anymore, having become highly expensive. There is a small battery-operated device, emitting a note, that can be mounted on a wristwatch. If turned on, the device will keep sounding until the battery dies. Assuming that the device is turned on before Shabat or Yom Tov, is it permissible?
