Name of God – Adonai

Question

Hebrew for Adonai

אֲדֹנָי

יְיָ

יְהוָֹה

יהוה

Am I correct that all four words are pronounced Adonai?

If a written document contains the name of G-d, it should not be discarded; it should be buried. Which of these words would require burial? If not, why not?

  1. They are all considered to be Names of Hashem and they are all pronounced Adonai.

All the Names are considered to have an inherent holiness to them and they should not be discarded with the regular garbage. They should be placed in what is called a Genizah (or Sheimos) which is a collection point for all holy articles that need to be disposed of by burial. Most Orthodox Synagogues have a Genizah on site.
