Food Knife on Shabbat

Question

Can you use a knife to cut bread or apply butter to bread during Shabbat? Or would the cutting of bread be considered part of the preparation for Shabbat and done before its arrival?

    There is no problem with slicing bread and spreading butter on it on Shabbat. In fact, a central feature of each of the three meals on Shabbat are the two challot, which are blessed upon and then sliced up and eaten by the participants.
