Etrog for Kiddush and Havdalah

Question

The Talmud/gemara in I believe Shabbat 117b states you should use something for a mitzvah for another mitzvah. Would using leftover etrogim from Sukkot to make wine for kiddush and havdalah fall under this category?

  1. Some people have the custom to use an esrog for Havdalah although the smell does not last for very long because once the esrog is punctured it begins to lose its odor. There is quite a prevalent custom that people pierce the esrog and cover it entirely in cloves and use that for Havdalah.

Esrog “wine” is not wine and should not be used for Kiddush.
