The Talmud, Tractate Nidah 17a, explains that it is dangerous for a pregnant woman to step on cut nails as it can cause a miscarriage. Because of this the Sages teach that one who burns their nails is a “Chassid”, one who buries them is a “Tzaddik”, and one who throws them on the floor in a public place is a “Rasha”. The Mishnah Berurah, 260:6,rules according to the Talmud. Nowadays it is possible that burning nail cuttings may not be quite so easy to do and many contemporary Poskim rule that they can be flushed down the toilet.
