Unless you are concerned that you will not say the Shema within the correct time, you should not cover your eyes the first time you recite the Shema as it is not the “real” recitation of the Shema. A person who is worried that they will not make the second Shema in time should cover their eyes when saying the first Shema, and recite all three paragraphs of the Shema as well.
