Breaking a glass under the Chuppah is a custom (not a “mere custom”) that was accepted by the vast majority of communities. It is mentioned in the Talmud and became the prevalent custom more than eight hundred years ago.
There is no requisite for what to use. However, common sense dictates that the glass should be made of thin glass and should be wrapped well before the Chosson smashes it.
