Aveilim

Question

Hi Rabbi,

I am very bothered by something that happened to my wife. My mother in law passed away after an illness and my parents attended the funeral and shivah. On Friday afternoon they insisted that we move out of their home before the coming Monday, even though they knew of her illness.

is there a halakha or advice from Rabbis about how to treat the aveil (mourner)? Are parents allowed to make requests of a business nature during shivah?

  1. I am so sorry to hear of your mother-in-law’s passing. May Hashem comfort your wife and her entire family among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

While what you describe sounds a little callous, there is nothing Halachically incorrect about what your parents did. However, I think that it is important to point out that without being privy to all the details of what happened, for example, how much advanced notice you were given and why you were asked to leave (whether there new tenants moving in etc.), it is impossible to know whether your parents asking you to move out was insensitive or not.
