It is certainly inappropriate. In order for a therapist to be truly affective, they need to build a relationship with their patient, one that is more than superficial. Such a relationship can easily become distorted in the eyes of one or the other and lead to a very unhealthy reality. That is why a man should go to a male therapist and a female should go to a female therapist.
Optimally, the therapist should be Frum so that they can better understand the background and the cultural nuances before they make any recommendations. Many times, the recommendations of non-Jewish or non-Frum therapists contravene the Halacha.
