Mikvah

Question

Hello,

I am a woman who is past menopause. I have not had a period for well over a year.

Due to menopause, my vaginal walls are thin. I am on a hormone replacement therapy for this and other issues related to menopause.

After relations with my husband I had a little spotting. Am I required to go to the mikvah since the cause of the bleeding is not from my menstrual cycle? Also, if doing a bedikah check may also cause bleeding.

Please advise.

Thank you.

  1. In general, the Halacha is very clear. Any blood that is seen that originated from the uterus causes a woman to become niddah – even if she is no longer having a menstrual cycle. Accordingly, the blood that you saw means that you need to wait four or five days and then to make a Hefsek Taharah and to do a bedikah on the first day and the seventh day. If everything is clean, you can then go to the Mikvah on the eighth night.

If you are concerned that the bedikah might be the cause of more bleeding due to the delicate state of your vaginal walls, I would recommend that you go to a “Bodekes Taharah”. A “Bodekes Taharah” is a Frum nurse who will be able to make the bedikahs in such a way that they do not cause any additional internal bleeding.

Please allow me to suggest that it might be preferable for you to have a local authority to help you through this time and to give definitive rulings when needed.
