Swimming on Shabbat

Question

Are you allowed to swim in a pool on shabbat? If not, what is the reason you are not allowed? I have young children that enjoy swimming

    Rabbi Neuwirth, Shmirat Shabbat Kehilchata 14:12, states that one should not go swimming on Shabbat. In the footnotes he explains that he has not given a reason because the Achronim, the Later Authorities, made a general decree that it is forbidden.
