Order of Honors for Aliyos

Question

My grandson had a Bar Mitzvah and I was surprised that I was the third in the line, after

the Shul Rabbi and a Friend Rabbi, to get an Aliyah as my son-in-law decided. From where

I come from, the Grandfather gets it after the Kohain and the Levy, but not after Rabbis not related to the family.

    First, please accept my Mazal Tov wishes on your grandson’s Bar Mitzvah. IMY”H, your grandson should grow up to become an integral member of Klal Yisrael and a source of immeasurable nachas to you and your entire family.

    While it is often the case that the grandfather receives Shlishi at the Bar Mitzvah, it all depends on the Shul and the way that the Aliyos are given out. For example, in many Shuls the Rabbi receives the third Aliyah each week, as it is considered to be the most important Aliyah. Even if that is not the case on a weekly basis, often the Rabbi of the Shul is given Shlishi when there is a simcha in the Shul as a sign of respect and appreciation for everything that the Rabbi does.

    And there is a general rule to respect all rulings of the Rabbi of the shul, since he is the authority to decide matters of the shul’s proceedings.
