    The translation of verse three is: A voice calls out in the wilderness, clear the way of God; make a straight path in the desert, a road for our God.

    Rashi explains: Kol – Divine Inspiration [i.e. a Heavenly Voice] – calls out in the desert. Clear the way of God – the path of Jerusalem to return the exiles to within her [Jerusalem].
