    Gefilte fish is a traditional food eaten by Ashkenazi Jews (Jews from middle and eastern Europe). It is basically ground fish patties cooked in a broth. The name gefilte fish is Yiddish for filled fish – originally this ground fish was stuffed into the skin of the fish it was made from, in order to serve it very aesthetically.

    Eating fish on Shabbat is considered “oneg Shabbat” – joy of Shabbat. The reason for eating gefilte fish is a prohibition to debone fish on Shabbat. By removing the bones, grinding and cooking the fish before Shabbat one can safely and enjoyably eat it on Shabbat.
