Question:

My nephew and his family are moving into a new home. What are the customary gifts to bring right before they move in? I think challah and salt are for good luck, though I don't know if that's accurate or why, or even if it's a Jewish custom. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The custom of having bread and salt in the house is quite well known and though I have not been able to track down a source for it, I've heard that it is a Russian custom. The reason is that bread is a food staple and means that the new home should never be lacking in food. Salt is a preservative also symbolizing the constant presence of food. I have heard that one should place candles in the house as well, so that the new home will always have light.
